gallery

Modern Eden Is a wonderful new gallery in San Franciscos North Beach, and yes I am so excited they are carrying my GreenStyled cuff. Even if they weren't I would tell you to check out this place. Kim Larson has a great eye. Paintings, wearable art, ... . It's also a cute little stretch of Francisco Street in the North Beach hood. On one side at the corner of Francisco and Powell St is the Francisco cafe. On the other side towards Mason Street is Sweeties, ...

North Beach

So I'm strolling up Columbus Ave.in San Francisco's North Beach keeping my antenae out for the perfectt store. Unique, artistic vision, supportive of local designers, a leaning toward repurposed. Haha, is this asking too much. Not in San Francisco where every cool neighborhood from Eco~Citizen on Russian Hill to Collage gallery on Protrero Hill have this spirit and carry my lines. I do this on a regular basis since I work at the North Beach branch of the San Francisco Public Library, when I'm not creating new green accessories. I pass the same luscious places daily, from Florio Restaurant, the most charmingly decorated restaurant in the universe, to Bohemeian Cigar Store, the best place to just chill.
And then, HELLO, where have I been; there is Abitare, this charing shop. Truth be told I stopped in for a postcard when. Cia the owner, and a total sweetie, asked about my SWEET D handbag. Well , you guessed it, they are now in her shop.
So next time you're in North Beach stop into this awesome treasure trove; you're bound to find something.
Abitare is at 522 Columbus Ave between Union and Green right up from the Bohemiam Cigar Store.

earrings and Sunda

Wow this has been an intense month. Overwhelmed by work. Lots of intrest in the Repurposed metal jewelry line. A very cool site called White Apricot saw them and loved them. Now the usual steps; send samples, ... . I'll let you know what happened.
Well this month, which saw me almost having a breakdown, culminated in lunch With cousins I've never met. I think my earrings would look amazing on Sunda. Anyway she's a really funny comedian.
Talk to you later.

Green Boutiques

Wow, the amount of earth friendly stores opening each day is amazing and inspiring. Thought of this today as I sat down to google "green boutiques" in ..., pick your city. One that really caught my eye was "Green Envy" in Newport, R.I. .The combination of of a green awareness and a real sense of style and fun makes places like this so exciting. I had a great talk with the owner Rachel, I'll let you know what happens. More and more stores have this fun vibe. It's at these kind of boutiques you're also more likely to find artist-made items.
Once Whole Foods had expressed interest in my bags and then wanted me to price them competetive with some $2.00 overseas made bags. It turned out to be a great experience though as it helped me to focus on all the fabulous independantly owned boutiques around the country that love to introduce artist designed and made work. So I think I started with Seattle and found this rockin' place on Capital Hill called Nube Green. I spoke to Abra and she loved what I was doing with re-purposing. Artist-made pieces are a big part of what thier about so it was a great fit. It just kept going from there. In Atlanta I found re-inspiration store. Located on Atlanta's Westside, I wish I was there right now so I could go hang out on Brooke and Julie's couch. Turns out my SWEET D bag was a perfect fit for this eclectic fun shop. so many more stores and sites to talk about, but for now it's back to cutting fabric and deciding if I want skinny or fat sterling tubes for my re-purposed metal and glass earrings.

I love Fredricksons Hardware in San Francisco's Marina. The people who work there are not only hardware lovers but will spend forever finding what you need. This is my go to place for jewelery dilemmas. And they'll even steer you to a cheaper source. Yesterday I was with one person for ever as he excitedly pulled metal findings and odd things out for me. Then just this morning in their paint store John helped me remove some film off my glass.

Locally Made

so I just ordered some more labels from the lovely Lucinda, well we've never met but her voice is so melifluious, at it's mine USA; ha ha, I love the enthusiasm in thier name. We decided to add "Made in San Francisco" to my label. Brings to mind the whole thought of why and what eco/artist/ minded folks want, and by extention what I want.
When I went to the Green Festival last year, where no doubt there was booth after booth of enticing products,I couldn't help but notice that virtually every product was made overseas. This brings up all kinds of questions on what is "green". The carbon footprint on flying products back and forth, might just be one. Is there importance in supporting local artists. Yet as a designer/artist, and one who appreciates, and purchases beautifuly and unique fashion from around the world, I want a world where my designs and the designs of others are readily available, and yet, both as an artist and a business person I know the challenges in the market place when it comes to cost.

Master Jeweler

Woke up to a wet grey day. Determined to stick to the day's plan I hop the MUNI bus which stops right in front of my house; one of those rare occasions of loving the much maligned bus system, then onto BART and over to Otto Frei tools and findings where I am to meet Larry Mikami the master jeweler. I could have stayed there all day, but he was generous enough to give me a good chunk of his time. I became more and more excited as he talked about his time in the jewelry/fashion design world of New York. We discussed its fickle nature; a huge dangle this season, a delicate little thing next. Letting silver chain run through my hands I saw my industrial pieces of mesh and glass dangling from it. "That's really cool" Larry said upon seeing my cuff. OK, I know I'm on to something

Doggie Bag

Growing up we had a house filled with animals. Amongst many cats, birds, fish, and even a pet mouse, were a couple of giant dogs. Thane our first was shiny black Great Dane. Monk followed, a Great Pyrenees, huge as well, but all white with thick fur you could bury your hands in. I never thought I'd be a small dog girl, but I find myself craving a little one. Just something to scoop into my lap, or my bag, and then Reine of Small Business Graphics, also my fabulous web mistress sent me this. It is destined

Lake Merrit

Had an inspiring couple of hours around Lake Merritt in Oakland. First stop was Otto Frei. They have jewelry findings and tools. It's somehow gritty and elegant @ the same time. I was looking for earring and cuff findings. After handling wonderful metal tubing and bits I realized I needed to come back when Larry the master jeweler and shop manager was there.
Wandering around while waiting for Ricardo to get off work I stumbled upon Chop Bar. A couple of people at the bar when I walked in, 2 hours later when we left it was packed. Not only only are they commit ed to using local, sustainable ingredients, the vibe is without any attitude. The folks who work there are so genuine and nice. No debates here on how peaceful my chicken was in it's last hour. Can't say I thought of that, it was on Portlandia the great new show by Fred Armisen. OK, back to cutting up produce bags, ha ha.

Selina's Sweet D

Jsut met Selina who got a Sweet D bag. This chick is amazing. Besides being totally aware of what goes into artist made pieces, she "gets" style. Hmm, maybe having modeled helps. GreenStyled's next blogger?

brainstorming

Just coming back from spending a most productive day at Reine's. This woman is amazing. Not only does she do my site but our brainstorming sesions are what keeps me going. You know those great connections where you feel so inspired it's like a drug. I want to put her brain in my greenstyled bag. How she makes time for her Small business Graphics is beyond me.
Looking for an aggregator to manage my random thoughts http://greenstyled.com

Green in the East Village

so I just talked to my cousin in NYC who loves buying her produce at Commodities Natural Market - in the East Village - better than Whole Food's, it is locally owned. She even saw my GreenStyled bags hanging out front, which prompted me to call and talk to "B" the manager there who I love ... Guess what? They are ordering 12 more bags! Love them - awesome!!!!

Reinspiration

So there's this great store on Atlanta's Westside. Reinspiration is where everyone, real house wives or not, can connect with their inner artist. So now here's the really cool thing; they're starting a website and one of their featured products will be my GreenStyled bags. Just talked to Brooke and Julie and they said the Atlanta girls are loving the Sweet D bag gettin' in. style for summer and the beach.

Just saw Joslin at Eco-Citizen on Polk Street here in S.F. - What a GREAT (and green) store. And she loves everything she has here. I'm so glad my GreenStyled bags are here!
